When Do I Need To Renew My Green Card?

27 Mar 2023

Many people often get their permanent resident cards (green cards) and assume they are supposed to last a lifetime because they contain the phrase “permanent” in their name. However, this is not the case, as most green cards have an expiry date. Many years ago, USCIS did issue green cards that did not contain an expiration date. However, USCIS stopped issuing green cards without expiration date about 30 years ago. Nowadays, even “permanent” green cards only has a 10-year validity period. It is important to note that only the card expires, not the underlying status. However, you will need a new and valid green card to demonstrate work authorization and for reentry to the U.S. after an international trip. As such, it is necessary to renew your “permanent” green card in a timely manner.

At JCL Immigration Attorneys, PLLC, we offer green card renewal assistance to Scottsdale, AZ, and surrounding residents.

When To Renew Green Card

It is best you renew your green card before it expires However, you can still renew your green card after it expires, but you may have issues with demonstrating work authorization and international travel when you wait for the new green card to be processed.

Green cards primarily offer two types of residence to their holders, conditional permanent residence and unconditional permanent residence.

Conditional permanent residence green cards are valid for two years; thus, you must remove the conditions before the two-year mark. You should apply 90 days before the expiration of your green card to remove the conditions and get a new permanent residence card valid for 10 years. It is important to note that if you have a 2-year conditional green card, BOTH your status and the green card expire, and you become deportable after your status expires if you have not submitted the application to remove the conditions of your green card.

On the other hand, unconditional permanent residence green cards are valid for 10 years; therefore, you should renew them before the 10-year mark. However, as mentioned, only your card expires, not your underlying status. But still, you should timely renew your green card so that you have a valid document to evidence your permanent resident status in the U.S. You can also check the bottom half of your green card’s front side to find your card's specific expiry date.
